We are huge animal lovers in this house. They are a lot of working keeping up with, but we love each one of them. Last week, our hearts were broken. The best cat we have ever had, Boss, died suddenly and too soon. Boss was such a big part of our lives. He bonded really close with our son, Barrett.
Boss was an extraordinary cat. Nothing phased him. He loved strangers – especially guys. We had paramedics come to our house, and Boss was trying to get into their bags. My stepdaughter, Ally, would bring a boyfriend over, and Boss would jump in his lap and look at him like “I’m here. You love me.” Boss used to settle our kids’ arguments when they were little. Barrett and Erynn would look at him and say something like, “Should we watch Rugrats? One meow for yes and two meows for no. ” Boss would look at them, wide eyed, and perform his duty immediately and settle the argument. I had never seen anything like it.
Do you get another pet when things like this happen? When is the right time? No one can tell for sure. I tend to react fairly quickly and go by when something comes up in your path and it makes you emotional, it’s meant to be….
Yesterday, I saw an ad for a kitten with the same coloring as Boss. Though we do not have any intentions of replacing him – no one could replace Boss – every time I walked by Barrett’s room, my heart would sink. It was lonely in there without Boss. When I was sent a picture of this kitten, I cried…. Erynn and I picked him up last night, and left him in Barrett’s room to surprise him.
This little guy is very timid, and will definitely need to warm up to his new environment, but I’ve seen a few smiles, and it helps us to move on, but Boss will never be forgotten.
