Dear New & Old Photographers – A short note

Dear NEW PHOTOGRAPHERS,

I’m sorry for what the photography industry has become.  There was a time when the industry was booming in a way that you were truly paid  what you were worth.  I wish it were still the same.

While we cannot live in the past, please do not undervalue yourself.  You are talented and worth much more than what you charge these days.

Say it with me:

“I DESERVE TO MAKE A SALARY OF NOT JUST A PHOTOGRAPHER BUT WORTHY OF A SERIOUS BUSINESS OWNER”

Keep plugging away and make the world see how awesome you are!

Your’s Truly,

Dear OLD PHOTOGRAPHERS,

(I apologize for calling you old – you know what I mean!)

I’m sorry for what the photography industry has become.  There was a time when the industry was booming in a way that you were truly paid  what you were worth.  I wish it were still the same.

While we cannot live in the past, please do not undervalue yourself no matter how bad it gets.  You are talented and worth much more than what you charge these days.

Say it with me:

“I DESERVE TO MAKE A SALARY OF NOT JUST A PHOTOGRAPHER BUT WORTHY OF A SERIOUS BUSINESS OWNER”

Keep plugging away and make the world see how awesome you are…

or……….

….find what makes you happy and will pay you what you are worth and what will fulfill you for your future (and guess what, it may not be photography anymore, and that is absolutely OKAY!!!!)

Your’s Truly,

Jodie Otte – the Realist  😉 —-  www.realbusinessphotographer.com

Ever wonder about Photography Past?

This post was sparked by an inquiry I made about some usage contracts.  Getting a copy of a few POs and reading them, well… it really slapped me in the face with reality.  Sometimes  you need that bit of a slap to see things for what they are.

For those who scoff at what I am saying as I’m sure the eyes are rolling – Take a peek at some of the purchase orders from a few commercial shoots, only a mere 5 or so years ago (click on them to enlarge).   This was the “normal”… This is no longer the “normal” for photographers.  Again, we can’t live in the past, but I sure wish we could sometimes, don’t you?

how to price commercial photography editorial photography pricing prices of commercial photography commercial photography contract

Personally – I saw the decline a few years’ back when a photographer constructed an article that consisted of telling other photographers to find their “happy place” price.  She quoted a five-day commercial shoot outside of her state for $5,000 and said that was her happy place price.  Well, I about flipped because I knew that $5,000 doesn’t even cover the expenses of the shoot (see those POs above!), let alone an actual salary.

And the rest of the sheep followed right off the cliff.

But…..

It is what it is.

I hope to see one day, photographers genuinely valuing themselves and really getting down to those numbers, the real numbers, that it takes to keep a business a success.  Something deep down inside tells me that it will happen but it will be a long time… I guess we’ll see.
