I know it is 4th of July for everyone else, but today is our son, Barrett’s 19th birthday. Wow. Time sure does fly.
As cliche as this sounds, it seems like yesterday that Dean and I were on the way to the hospital. I had pre-eclampsia and it was July 3rd, and we thought we were heading in to the hospital for a quick check and monitor of blood pressure since it periodically would go up (had several episodes of preterm labor – terbutaline is an awful but quite necessary drug!). It was no false alarm. Barrett was born on 4th of July.
Barrett had such a rough start to life. He had a NICU stay as he could not breathe on his own. I won’t go into all the sordid details (horrible colic, didn’t talk until he was 3, etc.); there was nothing easy about our Bear….. but wow did his big eyes light up when he was happy.
Some recent things about Barrett….
Barrett will have his first Computer Science degree finished this fall, and then will continue for his second Computer Science degree with a track in Cyber Security. We knew from the time he was building crazy lego creations to seeing him build his first computer that he was the technical one. He knew his future path from 9th grade on. The work he has put into this degree already – The college adviser was completely wowed by his testing scores and sent him straight to Calculus I, II, and III, completed in less than one year. That is pretty crazy!
There’s something about our kids that they cannot be stereotypical in anything they do and cannot stand to be type cast or do what everyone else is doing. While Barrett is quite the “computer geek”, he also participates in body-building which is obviously completely in the other direction of what one would expect of a computer geek. Check out this 15 second video of him lifting over 600 pounds. (Unfortunately he had run out of weight in his garage gym, so he had to chain some dumbbells on – which caused him to swing a bit). Dean and I are amazed at this boy – from the fragile newborn hooked up to so many tubes with the doctor say he may or may not be okay from lack of oxygen to seeing this. I think we can honestly say he is okay!!! (click to view)
Not many people are allowed into Barrett’s close circle, and if you do, consider yourself very lucky. Barrett is very unique but a man of few words – his words always have a purpose. He has a great sense of humor, but if you aren’t listening, you may miss out, and he will only share with those who he trusts and feels are important enough or worth his time. He has always been incredibly responsible and can always be counted on to do the right thing or approach anything in a logical manner. While we always worry about our children, I can tell you, whenever I had put Barrett “in charge” growing up, he always came through for us.
Here’s another recent shot of our boy… err I mean man *sigh* and his beautiful girlfriend, Toria.
Happy 19th birthday, Barrett Otte! We love you so much and are incredibly proud of you and are excited to see what your future holds!
