Wow… I can’t believe it. Between semesters in college, I have finally caught up on all my photography client galleries!
That deserves a big share of newborn images from a recent session. Again, all on location. This was done an evening this week with studio lights that I bring to my clients’ home. It’s amazing – I spent 10 years only working in my former commercial studio, and now that I am back on location, these babies are doing even better than in the studio. They know they are in their familiar environment at home, and how nice it is for the parents not having to pack everything up and travel.
This little newborn baby boy was sweet as he could be. I love arriving to a fed and sleepy baby, and by the end of the session, wide awake and ready for his closeups.
For anyone wondering – yes, this is a typical newborn session. I ended up showing 50+ images in color and 50+ in black and white. My goal every session is to get simple clean images focused on baby….
Wide open eyed awake newborn images – There is nothing like the subject connecting with the viewer. These are always my favorite. When the parents look at pictures of their baby, they want to see their baby – who she/he is with their beautiful alert eyes!
Tiny newborn details – They are only little once. It’s so nice to capture those little tiny details such as hands, feet, eyelashes, ears, and toes.
Baby quirks – the quirks – the motion, the way your babies move that makes them unique…. little splayed fingers or the wrinkles of the forehead.
Sleeping curled newly born shots in natural poses. I like to work with the newborn him/herself. Every newborn settles in certain positions. Some ball up their fists, some relax their hands, some love being on their belly, some on their backs. Some love their feet up near their face while others want to stretch out big. I do photograph certain poses by request, but love when I can just observe and work with the individual baby as he/she is comfortable.
Newborn Prop Shots by request. I usually bring a prop or two but in all honesty, I love incorporating something that actually has purpose and meaning to the parents. That’s a great advantage of working in the client’s home. Mom brought the sailboat out and wasn’t sure if baby would fit in it. YES! I knew he would – smaller items actually look better with baby than larger items. Dad is into MMA fighting, so the gloves were a must! I don’t like to dress baby up or put baby with props that have no meaning to or style of the parents.
Newborn photographs with mom/dad or siblings (if desired) – clothed or skin shots, whatever the request.
Relationships – I love to capture the relationships between parents and baby. The way mom and dad glance at each other, or the look of adoration of their little one.
