One more… Flying Squiryl

One more snow shot for today… I know I have been taking a lot of pictures of my dogs, Moose and Squiryl - especially Squiryl.  That’s because she is so crazy and 9 times out of 10, she’s the one hogging all the attention…  I’m hoping during my partial week off after Christmas, I’ll be able to share some of my own family, who seem to get pretty neglected when it comes to pictures this time of year…
Speaking of the busy-ness… ;)  if you are pregnant or have had a baby, please call right away at 443-299-2752 so we can get you on the schedule.  We are currently not taking any child sessions or family sessions until January.  We are booking in January and beyond.  You may get a head start on booking spring sessions as well!

Non-Portraits | Commercial, Editorial, Nature, Landscape

I know I have a few people who follow this blog who remember years and years ago when all I would share is my personal pictures for fun, or my landscape/nature work… Why do I know this?  Because I am still getting emails asking if I stopped doing nature/landscape work, and why don’t I show it….

Well, when I opened my studio, it took off to the point where I haven’t found much time for shooting for personal use, let alone sharing things other than portrait work.  I am happy to say, we are FINALLY getting another site finished up that will have all of the non-portrait work.  Some on this new site have been used in publications both commercially and editorially, but also some of the more well-known images that have been displayed in galleries and shows and even some simple things that just catch my eye…  It’s slowly getting completed, and I can’t wait to share.

In the meantime, here is something that I don’t believe I have ever showed…

Chicken Adventure

I thought I would share something fun this morning — If you know me, you know that I acquired chickens for the first time as chicks around Easter time.  I thought it would be a great experience for my children, and who can resist the idea of fresh eggs?    I have to warn, if you ever get chickens, they are very addicting.  The idea was get a couple chicks (click here to see original chicks).  We bought all female but when I went to check out online, it said, “click here if you want a free chick”… why not?  I didn’t think about it until they were on their way - of COURSE that would be a rooster, right?  Sure enough it was… but then we got another surprise - that in a minute.

We were going to throw together a coop using a dog kennel, but then I found a great Amish structure place in Shrewsbury, PA, so I bought a premade coop to match our house of course ;)  Dean and I have spent many hours working on the chicken run, and here it is thus far….

chicken coop

It’s an ugly foggy day, but you get the idea.  We planted ornamental sunflowers around the front and concord grape vines in the back (on the right in this picture) to hopefully climb up the side of the run and offer some more protection/shade eventually.  We’ve fox proofed, racoon proofed, and hawk proofed this coop and run.  We’ve got a little “zen” pond going up near it as well… we’re trying to complete our projects before it gets too hot out…

Mind if I share a little accomplishment of my own?  I made this window.  The only thing I was disappointed about this coop was that the cross ventilation wasn’t very good.  I found trim moulding that was similar, and went to work constructing a pull-open window to match the coop… I think it turned out pretty nice myself ;)

 chicken coop

At last - the chickens.  They still have more growing to do, but look how big they have gotten!  Here they are waiting for me to open the door to the run….

 chickens

A Rhode Island Red pullet coming out of the coop….

  chickens

And here is our little surprise — we ended up with TWO roosters in that batch.  This buff cochin is definitely a roo.  When we pick him up and put him back down - he crows like he’s so disgusted with us - how dare we pick him up like a common chicken…

chickens

From left to right - americauna (she will have blue eggs), barred rock, americauna, Rhode Island red, Rhode Island red… all girls…

chickens

And this is Dean’s favorite - this was our “bonus chick”.  It’s an Americauna.  Dean calls him “Bad @ss” - I have to agree.

chickens

Can you believe in a week, we have seven more chickens coming?  Two blue cochins, two silkies, and three polish - they are “ornamental” chickens - so they are more for fun than anything else! :D  So far, so good, though - I’ve learned that chickens don’t have to be a really messy deal… and definitely not a lot of upkeep once you get them set up.

But I tell ya - chickens are VERY difficult to photograph - they move too quickly. Try it with a wide aperture, and wow…

Large Showcase - Pregnancy photography, pet photography, family photography, newborn photography, candid, black and white, covering it all…

I thoroughly enjoyed working with this gorgeous loving couple.  It is such an honor to be a part of my clients’ lives as they become a family.  These sessions were so fun, and I hope to be watching their little one grow over the years… We covered just about everything - pregnancy, newborn photography, even pet photography! ;)

Namaste Boss

Running a business has always been stressful.  Looking to destress and keep my sanity, I like to take 15 minutes in the morning to do yoga.

I couldn’t help but to take this picture yesterday.  I know Boss pops up in a lot of my pictures but that is because he is always here, staring at me.  While trying to concentrate on my breathing, balance, etc., he was either kneading on my chest, rubbing against my face, licking my toes, or staring up at me.  How can you keep things serious and focused if this is what you see constantly…. ;)

Bird Watching in Maryland | Merry Christmas Dean :)

As I was sipping my coffee this morning with my husband, Dean, I decided with the light snow, it was time to get my yearly bird pictures taken through the glass doors, while I sit on my couch lol ;)   My goal was to get a picture of the red-headed woodpecker I see nearly every day on my deck railing…  Dean went out and put some bird seed in the feeder…

and we waited…

First up, a dove… You think the dove as a peaceful bird, but it really isn’t.  She likes to sit in the middle of the feeder and hog it all, warning the other birds to stay away from her prize…

Next up, blue jays… we regularly have about six of them, but I just managed to catch one…

Then to our surprise, a bunch of scavengers arrived…

Yes, we have a theme…

This is the time of year when the obvious theme is horses and football…  well… we can’t help it, that’s our extracurricular activities this time of year ;)  I’ve promised myself that this weekend, I will shoot a lot of fall scenery as it appears we are at the height of the fall color.  If Sunday is nice, I want to get my children in the evening up to the stable to do a shot of them cantering their horses next to the woods so I can enlarge it big for my wall at home.  It’s an image I have been wanting to get for a while.  I hope the horses cooperate.  Erynn and I took a ride last night and our two horses freaked out at a pile of hay in the middle of the field.  Erynn and I were near tears laughing so hard while our two horses - ears pricked forward, side stepping everywhere, and snorting/blowing air out their noses like the pile of hay was going to grow legs and fangs and get up and come running after them.  Horses are very funny creatures.

I loved this shot of Erynn - this is Erynn in her favorite element.  She tends to be a fairly prissy girl, but once she is around animals, she becomes a bit of a tomboy and cares for each and every one of them.  She doesn’t care who the animal belongs to, she wants to take care of it.  She found a dying bird last night and was petting it, feeling helpless as to what she could do to help, so I picked it up and we made a little nest in some hay that wasn’t around the horses.  I knew it wasn’t going to make it, but it made her feel better.  (I’m sure one of the barn dogs or cats snatched it up later…)  If she doesn’t become a vet or something else that has to do with animals, it will shock me.  She has been watching Animal Planet ever since she was around 3 years old, completely fascinated with nature shows.

I’ve also noticed that she is attracted to tie dye and peace signs, but that’s another subject… lolol!

I caught her up on the fence with Babe (Pippi’s momma) - Babe was licking her, up and down her arms for a while, and then Erynn decided to pull a few burrs out of her mane… I loved how the “sweet light” was touching her… (that’s the light near sunset - the light I highly recommend photographing children in when possible) :)

A Dog and her Boy

I have now begun starting to photograph kids with their dogs ;)  I do this hesitantly because I have two monsters… errr… I mean, dogs at my home named Moose and Squirryl that are absolutely insane.  I know my dogs could not be photographed at a studio in any way.  Just bringing them off my property is insanity.

I met Keta a few years ago and was very impressed that she was such a good girl.  Her owners put a lot of time into her training, and it shows.  She’s such a nice pup… and her boy… her boy is such a little sweetheart.  I photographed him as a newborn, and now he’s awaiting the arrival of his new little sibling.

More from this session later :)  Oh, and it looks like we are finally back on line now. Ever since last week, I couldn’t hold a signal on our modem for more than 5 minutes straight. It made communication difficult, so yesterday morning at 6 a.m., I was on the phone with verizon and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we have resolved this. One of the little complaints I have concerning being in the cornfields…

The Dogs

When I was photographing the mushrooms at the top of the page, I couldn’t help but to take some snaps of my pups… they can’t help but make a nuisance of themselves any time I bring the camera out… Moose (Chocolate Lab) is our laid back good ‘ol boy. Squiryl, on the other hand, is absolutely crazy. I feel the need to explain this every time I show pics - but Moose has that white PVC pipe around his invisible fence collar due to Squiryl chewing it off… :)

Three kids and a pup… Maryland Pet Photography

I don’t typically advertise pet photography on my site; however, I do photograph pets with their people on occasion on a limited basis.  If this is something that you wish to have, please contact the studio for details and restrictions.

It was my pleasure to photograph these three again!  I hadn’t seen them for two years - J, L, and M - thank you for brightening my day! :)

Cape Hatteras - Post 3 - Ocracoke Island cont’d

So after everyone is fed and feeling well, it’s time to drive out on the beach and relax! Well, relax for myself and Dean but the kids were everywhere… ;)

Maybe I am spoiled, but this is the *ONLY* way to do the beach!!

Cape Hatteras - Post 2 - Shopping on Ocracoke Island

We took two trips to Ocracoke this year.  To get to Ocracoke Island, you must take a ferry from the edge of Hatteras - it takes approximately 30-40 minutes once you drive your vehicle onto the ferry.

It’s kinda become a tradition to arrive on Ocracoke and have breakfast at Pony Island Restaurant, park and walk around the island - shop, and shop some more…

We ended up sitting at the Jolly Roger Pub for a couple minutes (that is what brought on the Plymouth Island trip, but that, we will revisit in another post), and I couldn’t resist shooting the pelicans that were hanging out…

After shopping, we needed a break - you can’t visit Ocracoke without stopping into the famous Howard’s Pub

Howard's Pub

Okay, well, I received an “okay” from Dean to post this one… we were all getting that mid-morning “sleepy” solemnly walking around on the island… when Dean broke away from us quietly… we look over to see this… The funny thing is, I actually took this shot before our visit to Howard’s Pub ;)

To be continued….

Cape Hatteras - Post 1

As I said, I am going to show little clips of our vacation in posts here and there for the next… well… for the next - I have no idea how long,  until I’m through editing.  I can only edit a little at a time because I have customers and regular business items to take care of - so only in my very early mornings or late evenings, I will have time for this, but as I get finished sections, I will post a few pics, and then at the very end, construct a slideshow that will be made into our Cape Hatteras 2008 coffee table book for our family :)

Our beach house this year was soundside, and on a canal… it was very very relaxing.

This is Rocky the squirrel.  He visited us every morning waiting for corn chips or peanuts…  You will see a LOT of animal images with our vacation - we had quite a few visitors and my kids made some animal friends along the way lolol!

I was so very touched by my children this year.  Barrett and Erynn are very close.  They are 2 years, 10 months apart in age - but so very close.  If one of them hurts, the other hurts.  They know how to make each other laugh, they know how to make US laugh….  They have such a special bond - I’m constantly amazed and I feel so very blessed to witness this type of relationship between siblings.  Throughout my vacation images, I made sure I caught glimpses of this bond.  Barrett is 12 now and in the 7th grade - big middle schooler should want nothing to do with his little sister, right?  No, that’s not the case… here he is just holding her hand out in the rough water on the first day at the beach in Hatteras.

The Fun Show at Muddy Creek Meadows

This is our second year participating in the Muddy Creek Fun Show.  We’re proud to report that this year, there were no ambulances! ;)

At any rate, I have some pictures and hopefully a video to share… It was a very nice way to start off our vacation.

This is my daughter, Erynn, riding her horse, Stormy.  Stormy is a very good with Erynn and actually treats Erynn very gentle MOST of the time.  She does understand the difference between an adult rider and a child; however, she still gets wired up and ring sour when it’s time for any shows that require a fast time.  You can’t hold her back, or she will begin to rear and get very excitable.  Here’s Erynn and Stormy doing the 50-yard dash (and scurry race in the other one). And yes, folks, indeed, Erynn was at a full gallop – all four feet off the ground !!!  The smile on Erynn’s face is priceless!

Muddy Creek Meadows Fun Show

and then Barrett…  He was riding his horse, Willow.  It has taken me a long time to realize that Willow is not my horse… she is Barrett’s horse… she really truly likes him and they work very well as a team.  She did throw a buck with his first race, and it didn’t phase him.   That is what amazes me, children are so tolerant and able to not have fear like us adults… I think Willow has come along well since last year… The last picture of Barrett with Willow - if you look, you can see this is about the moment when Barrett realized that riding a Percheron cross bareback is not the most comfortable situation for a boy… ;)

These are for Trish and Tim… Tim is riding Stormy’s baby - I do believe he got his rearing from his momma!

Here’s a video of Erynn and I completely bombing partner pickup…. but I had to laugh at my husband’s commentary… I am, however, very impressed at Erynn was able to stay in her seat with that rearing with no stirrups (she was in my saddle). The way it was supposed to go (our…err… plan…) - was she was supposed to use my saddle and ride down to the barrel. I was supposed to use the stirrups and get up on the saddle behind her, and we were supposed to canter back happily… nah, that’s not how it worked… lolol!

Please understand, the studio is currently closed for vacation and will reopen August 27th.  If you have a newborn, please call 443-299-2752 and we will do our best to respond before that time.

One of my dogs - this is Squiryl.  Um… yeah, we have two dogs - Moose and Squiryl…. thanks to my odd family ;)

At any rate, I am always working on new techniques and new plays on my photography… here’s one of the latest…

Horse Show this weekend.

Well, we are back from the horse show this weekend. Besides still coughing up dirt/dust and the horrible sunburn on my back, we’re ready to start the new week…

I do have some grumblings about the judge treating the girls under age 12 not so great (but I probably won’t clutter this blog up with that…) - besides that, Erynn did place a 6th and a 2nd which made her happy. That is probably her last show for the year, other than a fun show and I hear a rumor about another paper chase - I’ll stick with the flat classes! ;)

A few shots of her at her show… the facilities were beautiful despite the dust… I kinda lost interest in shooting once I heard the way in which the judge was speaking to the girls… so I didn’t capture a whole lot…

After the rain…

I can’t help it, I enjoy the spring storms we get.  Now ask me if I still like them three months from now, and I will probably be sick of them… lolol… but as of now, they are nice… comforting in a way, knowing that summer is coming.

Check out our little visitor in the front yard after the rain yesterday…

Baby, Child, Pregnancy, etc. photography 365

With the new year approaching, everyone is deciding what their New Year’s Resolutions will be.  One of mine is to do a 365 - at least one image will be posted here every day for one year.  It may be of a client, or it may be of nature or any of my surroundings here in Maryland.   I personally live in Northern Harford County on the border of PA, but my studio is in Baltimore County, so between Southern PA and those two counties, there are plenty of photos to be taken.  What I would like to be disciplined about is stopping for a moment and shooting - like in these two cases… the first, I was driving to the stables to take one of my horses out to ride, and wanted to appreciate our surroundings…

Maryland, Pennsylvania, photographer, nature

or just stopping on the side of the road on the way to the studio when I see something a little bizarre like these buzzards that were taking a break along a fence…
