I actually look forward to seeing the family of this little boy - a little bit of chaos and all (this year, oldest boy showed up in a full leg cast ;)). When mom first came to me with his oldest brother (cowboy hat boy if you all remember him from years back…), she expected that this was going to be her only child. A little while later, she was bringing me her second son who was a total miracle/surprise. WOW! But I was looking at her thinking…. umm… she kinda looks pregnant again but I’m not going to say anything because I could be wrong… Sure enough, midway through our session, she informed me that she was carrying another baby, another boy!!! From no kids, to three boys in three years, wow! The best thing about the mom and dad is if they stress, they don’t show it. They are so laid back and go with the flow. So here’s her youngest, now a year old, and he’s just as cute as the other two with the same stunning blue eyes. He actually was in our first Similac Infant Formula ad as well!

Well here we go, yet another gorgeous little one! My favorite has to be the ones with the hat - not many little ones will leave a hat on, and she did

Happy is the word to describe this little boy. This is the second time I have had the pleasure of working with A. The last time I saw him, he was 2 or 3 months old. I remember we wanted him to fall asleep so badly, and mom put him down when he did. As soon as mom put him down, he opened his eyes and smiled HUGELY… He smiles constantly. You can’t help but to smile whenever you are around this sweetheart.

Spring is here! And with it comes family and child portraits! I’m asked quite a bit if I do family portraits, as many see baby pictures and assume that is all I photograph - no no no, I enjoy working with children and their families as well
Here’s a little tip for what to wear for family portraits. These families had some great ideas, and I wanted to share them with you. Choose a color that you like, and coordinate your entire family with those colors. You don’t want to be “matchy matchy” and match everything exactly, but different styles but in the same color family are an excellent choice! The main thing you want to avoid is clashing patterns. Going with textures as opposed to patterns is a safe route to take, although a subtle pattern mixed with solids is fine.
Beautiful beautiful families

and congratulations to M and A in this next picture — I’ll be seeing them this week with their brand new little one :) (yeah, she’s pregnant in this picture and looks gorgeous!)

So our new portrait studio is coming along nicely; however, it has been a drag not being able to do all the finishing touches quickly with all that snow closing us down for a while. We are still doing photo sessions of course, but not outdoors. It’s a shame, we now have 8 acres to work on, and it’s completely snow covered…. but that’s okay, eventually spring will come
I’ve been so busy painting and organizing, I have neglected my blog. Yesterday was the first day in a while I felt like I was starting to catch up. I’m waiting for many print orders right now, as UPS hasn’t delivered in over a week due to the snow. There’s new studio furniture we’re waiting on as well… so for the next few days, I have some blog posts ready - finally! ;) Beautiful children….

Okay, we have been busy busy busy busy!!! My email boxes are so full right now, it’s unbelievable, and I promise, all will be answered and taken care of today. I have a shoot first thing this morning, and I will spend the rest of the day answering emails and phone calls. We finished up our first childrens/baby/maternity photography workshop of the year on Friday (we only have a few seats left for workshops this year - http://www.jodieotte.com/mentoring.htm - Our furthest attendee is coming from the UK - how fun is that! :))
At any rate, the big big news? What is the big big news? Well, I was getting ready to sign another lease for my current studio, and right before we started shooting for the next Similac ad in November, I happened upon another studio situation. It all seemed too good to be true, but there it was, staring me in the face, and I had to make a decision.
Yes, we are moving into the new studio in February. It is about a minute or two down the street from the current studio. We will be using this entire building, and it sits on 8 beautiful private acres. The gentleman who has renovated this building, has done a tremendous job. Here’s a picture.

Here are two little “storyboards” of the decor going in the shooting area and the coffee-shop-style kitchen…

Needless to say, we’ve been placing orders on furniture, we have 34 gorgeous canvases that will be hung all over the building (I finally have great wall space), I have all new photography sets coming - everything from a shabby chic look to barnwood to stonework, and spring… wow, spring is going to be amazing shooting outdoors. We even have a stream going through the property!
So get ready, while I am still booking sessions right now, most are taking place starting the second week of February and we even have some booking up to August, so please contact us to get on this schedule! We also will be having an open house once everything is in place and settled, so stay tuned for the news.

It always amazes me how many expressions a child can have… Will was great - what a personality!

Babies and children in studio…

I’m making an effort to spend a few minutes a day through Christmas, blogging client images -
I feel blessed to get to work with families and be a little part of their lives for a brief moment. I’m a very emotional person, and I find I pick up really quickly on the vibes of others, and get a chance to really see their personalities and who they are in this brief time…. Every family is so unique and different, these children were no exception. They wanted to do their own thing for this portrait, and of course I let them. In looking at them here, their personalities are spot on with the picture…

Okay, this is a random post, I need to announce a couple of things…
1. My blackberry went missing this week. If you are waiting for a call back from me, that is why you are still waiting, and I am so sorry! I’m hoping to have the new one activated by this evening and be back on track. In the meantime, if you need to reach me, please call 410-557-4631 and leave a message or send an email to theblackhorsestudio@verizon.net
2. Lots of inquiries for workshops this week. Yes, I am going to release some workshop dates hopefully next week for 2010. Please keep an eye out for this - if you have emailed concerning workshops, I have already put you on the waiting list to notify first.
Here are a few recent sessions…

This little girl was such a doll!

This busy adorable one we started in the studio, but quickly went out to burn off some energy

Happy boy and his mom and dad. This is the second time I have photographed this little guy and it was a pleasure! The first time, he was only a week or two old. There is a picture of him in my portrait website galleries as a baby, and I am sure you can pick out which one he is. He still looks like his baby pictures!

While our first shipment of books went out, we have another shipment ready to go. We also have another shipment that came in last week and are ready and waiting. For more information (now posted) or to purchase, please go to http://www.jodieotte.com/books.htm
Here’s an inside peek…

And as promised, more natural light images — this was on another very very bright day… this little boy was so sweet and so much fun to work with ![]()

Typing this minus a thumb, if it didn’t hurt to move a few of my fingers, it wouldn’t be so bad… and of course, this is the long post…. I had a minor injury yesterday. I laugh because all of us have our “thing” once we get around 30-40 years old. My husband’s was semi pro football, now kayaking (a little safer LOL!)… my thing is my horses. I originally was just going to ride for fun, but I jumped a few times and even though I’m not really good at it, it is
So during my lesson last night, my horse did a “pop” over about a 2 foot jump (I know, I’m a whimp, that’s not very big of a jump…) and if you know anything about popping over a jump vs. jumping over it with a horse, I was in the air and came down on my horse’s neck, for some reason, landing mostly on my thumb. *sigh* Only me… I tell ya… so it’s either broke or jammed… probably jammed, but I’m not sure when I will have time to get it x-rayed… I have a full day of sessions today - thankfully, it’s my left hand… I was very proud though, to give up my thumb instead of falling. I’m not a very graceful person, (if you have seen me work, you know I trip over my own equipment in my studio) so this is quite the activity for a non-graceful person to get into… LOL
At any rate, on to my post…. It’s that time of year again
We are closing the studio for some family time as well as regroup as when the studio opens back up, the Christmas rush will begin! The studio will be closed from July 16th until August 2nd. We will reopen August 3rd.
We are currently booking sessions from August 2009 through January of 2010. Our Christmas cutoff will be during the first week of November. If you are wanting portraits done in time for Christmas or fall color portraits, PLEASE contact us now to be placed on the schedule. We book up very quickly this time of year.
IF YOU ARE PREGNANT OR HAVE A BABY NOW OR WHILE THE STUDIO IS CLOSED, please call 443-299-2752 and leave a message with me. While I am away, I will still be able to receive voicemails, and will bring my calendar so we can fit you as first priority into the schedule. Newborns are always #1 priority.
I am so excited to be able to spend a few weeks with my family… speaking of family, here’s a series of a beautiful family that I could envision as a grouping on a wall in their home…

Thank you all for the turnout of models. We had over 100 local baby models apply. The final four were notified. I am going to try to send a personal message to each and every one of you, but I hope you all read my blog and at least see this — Everyone has such absolutely beautiful babies, and I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to respond to the casting call.
Please keep an eye on this blog in the future for more of these exciting opportunities!
We are also in the process of making some changes to our website - check it out every once in a while as changes are made –> Baltimore baby and child photographer, Jodie Otte, Black Horse Studio
After all the girls I have photographed lately, finally brothers!

Just a quick share as I am heading out the door for a travel session today.

Yes, it’s awfully cold here in Maryland. The majority of our photo shoots have been inside the studio during this time, but we usually start in the studio, and if the weather permits, shooting a little outdoors in the property just for some more variety. While I don’t post all sessions to my blog, I thought I would dedicate this post to studio images, and share some that haven’t been shown… Stay-tuned, however, I finally have an image from two Fridays ago that I have been waiting a year to do…

A quick note - if you wish to have any prints back by Christmas, the deadline for ordering is December 11th. I did extend that date this year. This is for prints or regular albums. Custom items such as storyboards and coffee table books cannot be guaranteed Christmas delivery.
So again, I am neglecting this blog. I really don’t mean to, I have just been working hard trying to get sessions proofed and orders placed, and in any spare time, trying desperately to spend a little quality time with my children…
Here’s a cutie I haven’t shared yet. He was so fascinated by everything outside. Dad called him a city boy, so we laughed every time he picked up leaves with such amazement lol

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous girl… what else can I say? ![]()

Let’s move back into the studio for a little bit… here are two more siblings, of course - this time BOYS!

More siblings! :) I’m actually asked over and over again about the studio - yes, this is still on the studio property. While we are located in an area that is far from congested and not always incredibly convenient, it is well worth it to use the property surrounding the studio on nice days. I like to take advantage of the best of both worlds - indoors in the studio and outdoors around the studio. Kids do better when we can do a little of both, so they are constantly stimulated by their surroundings and don’t get bored in the same spot in front of a big light

Oh wow, where have I been? My poor blog, neglected…. sad…. but… well… For some strange reason, right in the middle of Christmas Rush, well, that’s the time when something is going to happen, right? It’s just the way things work. One of my wisdom teeth were bothering me really bad. Funny, because I specifically remember wwwaaayyyy back when I was in high school, my dentist said, “you don’t have anything to worry about, your wisdom teeth will never come in.” But about 10 years ago, two of mine broke through the surface; however, one of those two has been lodged against a tooth for 10 years, of course creating problems, but I procrastinated removal.
So last week, I couldn’t wait any longer, and I go and get two extractions done. Um… yeah…. wide awake, no anesthesia, that’s the way I roll! lol
If you know me, you know that I don’t take medication. I have to have some really bad pain to open up the ibuprofen or Tylenol. I cannot take prescription pain medication at all. I’m very allergic to some, and others will not stay in my stomach for even 5 minutes, even at the lowest half dose I can possibly take. So over the years, through two C-sections, hernia and diastasis surgery, all I took was Tylenol or ibuprofen. It’s not very pleasant, but either is the alternative. I’ve always just sucked it up and dealt with the pain.
So of course, wisdom teeth extraction is no exception. I chose no anesthesia due to having problems coming out of anesthesia. I did get shots of novacaine to numb everything, and after one episode of nearly fainting as the numbness crept down my throat fooling me into thinking I coudn’t breathe, I took a huge deep breath and went to my “happy place” while the dentist went to work cutting and drilling, and finally pulling those nasty things out.
Whew, it’s done, it’s done, it’s DONE! It’s a relief. I’m dealing with the pain and throbbing, and Motrin does take the edge off, but today is probably the best I have felt since undergoing the procedure.
Well, enough of my drama, of course, I have many many many pictures to show, but not enough time as usual, so I’ll end this post with siblings… the most popular session type this time of year!
I have a special place in my heart for boy/girl siblings, because I have my own boy and girl and love to watch them interact, and know very well how to relate to them and how they relate to each other…

I absolutely hate the humidity we get here on the East Coast but I will accept it as long as I get to experience Fall every year… love love love these leaves - they transform the area around my studio and make it look completely different - love having variety and options year round over here!

Here’s the above cutie… as a newborn baby - yes, I photographed her when she was only a few weeks old…

Now look at her! Such personality!!! Every child has their “thing” - something about them that shines through with their personality and I love to capture it….Here’s a progression of the face she kept making - she was cracking us up and cracking herself up!

This is the fifth time I have seen this family for photographs. It has been so wonderful watching K grow up and then with the addition of his little brother… and they are nothing but fun… just absolutely fun! Toward the end of the session, they put on their soccer stuff and played outside the studio which was even more fun!

Do you remember these three girls? Two years ago, I photographed them in the studio in the three dresses - everyone remembers them
They were the first children I photographed when opening my studio in the new location in Monkton. It was so nice to see them again!

This is my favorite time to photography children and families outdoors at the studio… it’s just beautiful everywhere, and we haven’t even had the leaves change colors yet - just wait, in the next few weeks, everything will look completely different.
I had a lot of fun working with this family of three - they are just the sweetest couple and such a laid back little boy…
