September Photography Workshop/Seminar News, etc.

If you are attending the September Photography Workshop/Seminar, please check your email for travel information. We do have two seats remaining. Since this question has come up a lot - no, I have no information on any 2009 workshops. We have something going on right now, adding another branch to my photography as well as have something unrelated in the works, and once that all is completed, I will be able to make some decisions for 2009.

We have one Studio Lighting Naturally book left in stock and the reorder is going out now - if you wish to preorder, we can have the books in stock within two-three weeks but I cannot guarantee they will stay in stock ;) So if you wish to have them quickly, go ahead and preorder.

Thanks :)

New Product for Child and Baby photography

While I was working with the lab yesterday, I decided to add another lab to my vendor list. I have had requests for the “standout” mount from my customers that I have at the studio but never felt they were a very substantial offering, so we never offered them “officially”.

I’m now adding “gallery mounts” to our product line. All storyboards will now automatically have this upgrade. The price for gallery mounts will be in between the regular prints and the fine art canvases. I’m currently having a sample printed for the studio for all customers to see, as well as two for my kids’ rooms - yes, that is how much I love them, I have to put them in my own house. I have a feeling, I’m going to want them all over my house. I plan to order at least four more.

Here are the two I have started with. I will share pictures of them up on the wall in the kids’ rooms as well as soon as they arrive as I am always asked about what I display at my own house - I need a 12-step program, I keep buying and buying… Sometimes my husband complains that the house is a shrine to our children all over the walls… *sigh*

But of course, I am ready to replace my standouts, and I’m working on composing an image of my kids with their horses walking them through a field at sunset…. hoping to pull that off this fall and oh yes, it will be big… very big in a high traffic area of my home ;)

Oh, and after much delay due to regular sessions, we are proceeding with booking equine sessions for fall. We are waiting for the weather to break. I have two reps, and I cannot wait to share!

Erynn will get a couple more in her room - smaller ones of her at her show this year. Barrett is starting football tomorrow night, so I will be doing more of these of him playing football later on… I’m finally going to be returning to a little sports photography - something I have missed out on for several years…

Ordering from the lab today…

I will be sitting at this computer ALL DAY today answering emails and making orders with the lab… I’m working hard to get everything together and ready before we leave for Hatteras in approximately two weeks.

Here’s a few more pictures from 2006 down in Hatteras (I’ll share some 2007 again at another time…)… every year, I try to get better pictures than the previous year… so this will psych me up to work harder this year!

Newborn Photographer - Video From Photography Workshop / Seminar

I have had requests to see a portion of the video taken at the May 08 workshop/seminar that I taught.  Here’s a little segment (below) with final picture…

I apologize, this was shot late in the workshop so my voice is half gone… but you can see basically how typical newborn sessions go, as well as the absolute disaster I make of my workspace ;)  (Oh, side note - two seats left for September Seminar/workshop - last for 2008).

Edited to add —— Tech Info for the Photographers:

  • Nikon D200 (only because my software that I tether with during workshops won’t accept my D3)
  • Manual mode — 1/250, F3.2 (for shallower DOF as I usually shoot around F5 in studio), ISO 100.
  • Nikkor 60 mm/2.8
  • Auto White Balance in JPEG
  • 50 x 50 Westcott Apollo softbox camera left (quite beat up due to travel…).
  • Beautiful 2-3 week old sweet baby girl ;)

Identical Twins - Children’s Photography

Having two children of my own, ages 12 and 9, thinking back to when I had them, I could have never imagined the doctor saying you have multiples… let alone - Identical Twins - what an amazing experience this must be!  These two girls were precious!

Random Tuesday - Green

Today’s subject is Green. These were all taken in my backyard… randomly per the subject line… I’m going to try to post a “random” day as often as I can. I have had so many request everyday things like I used to post years ago….

I firmly believe nearly everything in this world is beautiful if you look at it the right way…

Vacation schedule…Important Dates…. Bediboo and Christmas?!!!

I’m working on getting some more customer images proofed and loaded on-line - if you are due to have a gallery go up right now, you are most likely going to receive your password information tomorrow. Everyone else should have their galleries up within the next few weeks.

SCHEDULING INFORMATION

The studio will be closed from August 14th to August 26th. At this time, I have three session times left for August. If you are trying to get in before your school-aged go back to school, please contact me right away at theblackhorsestudio@verizon.net During the summer months, it is easier to schedule by contacting me through email as I tend to be out of the office a lot more than during the school year.

MATERNITY/NEWBORN CLIENTS

If you are pregnant and are expecting a baby during August, just contact me as soon as possible once your baby is born. In this case, it is probably best to contact me at 443.299.2752 (keep my number with you at the hospital :) ) — I want to make sure we can schedule while I am traveling. I probably will not have email access from August 14th until August 26th, although I will try to check in - we will be in a fairly remote area that should not have internet access.

BOUTIQUE APPEARANCE

I will be at Bediboo in Baltimore on August 9th shooting mini sessions for this wonderful boutique. These are very quick mini sessions with a special package pricing exclusive to this event. Bediboo will be displaying one of my books in their store by the end of this week, if you wish to see some of my work in person :) Hope to see you there!

CHRISTMAS!!!! ??? !!!!

If you wish to have prints in time for Christmas, please contact us to be placed on the schedule. November 10th is our cutoff date for sessions for Christmas print delivery. As usual, this time of year we book up very quickly, so please be thinking ahead!

Baby Photography - Do you recognize these babies?

These were two newborns that I photographed during two of my photography seminars / workshops. Yes, we will be in need of a newborn model for September. Also, we have three seats remaining for the September 2008 photography workshop. If you are interested, please go to Photography Workshop Link and an update on the Studio Lighting Naturally books - we have two books currently available in stock and ready to ship immediately - for more information, please go to Photography Book Link.

Family Portraits

I don’t typically do a lot of family portrait sessions. The reason why is it is very difficult not to get the “cheese” portrait. However, I will do child portrait sessions and bring the parents in on a few to get a few family portraits.

I have to admit, when three or more young children arrive to my studio, I get a little nervous… family sessions with young children are always chaotic so I prefer to work outside with them, but so worth it…

Here’s a lovely family that I photographed recently…

Missing Galleries.

Okay, this does NOT make me happy. Evidentally, I have been missing galleries on the website. We are working to upload the Newborn Gallery section as well as other areas that have somehow disappeared.

Horse Show this weekend.

Well, we are back from the horse show this weekend. Besides still coughing up dirt/dust and the horrible sunburn on my back, we’re ready to start the new week…

I do have some grumblings about the judge treating the girls under age 12 not so great (but I probably won’t clutter this blog up with that…) - besides that, Erynn did place a 6th and a 2nd which made her happy. That is probably her last show for the year, other than a fun show and I hear a rumor about another paper chase - I’ll stick with the flat classes! ;)

A few shots of her at her show… the facilities were beautiful despite the dust… I kinda lost interest in shooting once I heard the way in which the judge was speaking to the girls… so I didn’t capture a whole lot…

Recovering…. a personal triumph…

It is no secret that I have a hard time keeping up with this blog due to my very busy schedule. This week, I was able to sit down and prepare the entries ahead of time and set it on a timer to publish once a day.

Why did I have this time in my schedule? Because I am recovering! ;)

Sunday, I did a paper chase with my son, Barrett. A paper chase is sort of a race, kinda cross-country through the woods on horseback. I believe it is a two-mile race. I have some pictures to go with it. I rode my daughter’s horse, Stormy, and my son rode our other horse, Willow (who was supposed to be mine, but he has quite the connection with this mare… so I may be horse hunting again for myself this time…) This was the first time I have ever experienced such a thing. We started off, and Stormy basically said “Nuh uh….” and circled around, but no, I pushed her on… We were racing through the woods, cantering and galloping every chance we got - up hills, down hills, through water, etc. etc. I have to say it was the most amazing experience! Barrett is yelling “We’re free!!!!”

These pictures were taken by my daughter, Erynn, and my husband… Here we are waiting to start…

horses

Here I am warming Stormy up… yes, I can jump a little (I’ll revisit that thought in a minute), but I’m learning English riding - so I wasn’t totally comfortable going English that day… while an endurance trail saddle is not optimal for jumping, it can be done… excuse the look on my face - I really think I was holding my breath - yes, even on a tiny jump like this… I had no idea I would be so uptight and nervous riding as an adult… we are working on that…

horses

This is out of focus, but it’s me cantering to the finish line…see all the mud on Stormy?

horses

Barrett and I won second place - not bad for beginners! lol! ;)

We had also decided to go out on Novice over Hurdles (jumps were 2.6 feet or less). How bad can it be, right? I knew Stormy could jump that just fine… but the question is, could I? My daughter, Erynn, borrowed one of the lesson horses and wanted to follow us out. Willow decided to give Barrett a fit jumping that morning, so both my kids were going to go around the jumps. This was about getting the experience behind us, not about winning…

We started off… as we approached the first jump, I yelled “GO AROUND, I’m doing it!” It didn’t look THAT big….

In a split second, I was in the air and did a complete flip, landing on my back with the reins still in my right hand. At 32 years old, I have finally had my very first fall off of a horse (funny, because I watched my own son take the exact same fall a week earlier). I guess it was the adrenaline, but I didn’t feel a thing. I jumped up and screamed “I did it. My first fall, and I survived!!!” and without hesitation, swung right back up on Stormy.

We struggled through the woods, this course was definitely more difficult. At one point, Stormy decided we needed a bath, and veered off of the trail and jumped right into the water. As she stood there in chest-deep water and tried to play, I forced her back on the trail… we came to another small (heh… yeah… in my head, small….) jump, and I told the kids again, “Go around, I’m taking it…” I felt myself launch in the air, yet again… This time, I caught Stormy around the neck. I had both arms and both legs wrapped around her neck, and I am laughing so hard, I finally dropped to the ground. Needless to say, Stormy kept looking at me like “What the heck area you doing down there?”

At any rate, we did it! We survived… Here we are coming up out of the woods…

horses

So it’s not the kids we have to worry about… apparently it is the adults… I cannot begin to tell you how sore I was the few days after the falls… but I feel so much better knowing what it is like to fall - no more anticipation, it finally happened!

Newborn Photography - Part 4

You guessed it, another newborn baby GIRL! :) This time, we have a teeny tiny breech baby (did I spell that right?)!

These four are cousins. They were a lot of fun to work with - the weather held off just enough for us. This sweet little girl, I photographed when she was only around two months old, and it was so nice to see her again!

We’re back!

We’re back up after the bandwidth issue we had on this site. Anyway, I wanted to thank all my attendees for a fantastic workshop on Saturday as well as I am so grateful to Dean and Tracey for helping! :)

I also want to thank each and every one of you for the thank you cards and the sweet messages that you have sent - I promise, I will respond to each and every one - including after-questions ;)

I did want to share this with everyone - this is from Amarilis Fraticelli from Puerto Rico who attended the workshop back in April.

I am just writing to thank you for everything you taught us. You have no idea how much I learned during that day. I had no experience with studio lightning and everything you said was new to me. But you made it seem so simple and it was very well explained by you and in your book. Your staff was also very good to us. I was anxious to go home an start shooting. Here are some recent photos. Thanks again and God bless you, Amarilis

Check out her beautiful work and her website http://www.growingupphotography.com

Thank you so much for sharing!

A quick update - there are FOUR Studio Lighting Naturally Books available for immediate shipment and about 3 seats left for the Workshop/Seminar.
