The Black Horse Studio and Monkton in The Baltimore Sun

My friend just let me know that I was mentioned in the Baltimore Sun yesterday ;)  I had no idea… I’ll copy and paste the story.  It’s about the area - Monkton.

Link Here with some pictures

Insiders’ Guide to Monkton

Open space has broad appeal

The absence of dense development, crime and noise is striking, residents and real estate agents say. Much of the land in the rural, northern Maryland community has been preserved as open space or has been designated for agriculture by zoning designations.

“I think that’s a big part of the appeal,” says Frank H. Durkee III, a Realtor with O’Conor & Mooney in Phoenix and a 36-year Monkton resident. “The number of acreage in preservation is significant.”

When people buy homes in Monkton, they like knowing that the view from their bedroom or kitchen window won’t be blocked by another house in a few years, Durkee and other residents say.

Today, more than 10,000 acres have been preserved, says James Constable, president and chairman of the Manor Conservancy, a local land-preservation organization.

“It goes back many years to a core group of landowners who began working together to preserve the rural lifestyle of the area,” Constable says. “Some of it grew out of, ‘If you’ll preserve your land, I’ll preserve mine.’”

Some property owners have donated development rights; others have sold the easements to open-space programs.

Historic designations protect some of the property, which can be traced back to the 10,000-acre My Lady’s Manor tract, a gift from Charles Calvert to his fourth wife in 1713.

Monkton also has a historic district that includes the former Monkton Hotel, which houses several local businesses, and the Monkton Hall, home to a local art gallery and craft shop, near the old Northern Central Railroad Trail and station.

Outside the real estate market, Monkton is known as the center of Maryland’s horse country.

The Elkridge-Harford Hunt and the Blessing of the Hunt at St. James Church on Thanksgiving are important events for residents and the equestrian community.

“I can ride for hours and it’s all virgin territory,” says Montgomery McCausland, a Monkton native and the general manager of the O’Conor & Mooney real estate office in Jacksonville.

Forests, corn and soybean fields sweep across the horizon. Monkton is also home to Roseda Beef, a local cattle farm known for its gourmet meats.

Most of Monkton is in Baltimore County, but a sliver, which contains Ladew Topiary Gardens, is in Harford County.

Housing stock Single-family homes range in price from $350,000 fixer-uppers to multimillion-dollar estates. Styles also vary from contemporary ranchers to 19th-century Colonials.

“There are new houses, old houses,” says Durkee. “There are 1-acre properties and 300-acre properties.”

In addition to historic and custom-built homes, there are several subdivisions, including Henderson Hill and Chesterfield.

Schools Students in the area are served by Sparks Elementary (a 2005 Blue Ribbon School), Jacksonville Elementary, Hereford Middle School (a 2007 Blue Ribbon School) and Hereford High, which was ranked last year as among the top high schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

St. James Academy, a private Episcopal day school, accepts students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Crime is rare, according to Baltimore County police statistics. Fire and emergency medical service is provided by the county’s new Parkton station and volunteers at Hereford Volunteer Fire Company and Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Company.

Transportation Monkton is just a few miles off Interstate 83. Drive time to downtown Baltimore and to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 45 minutes. The light rail stop in Hunt Valley is about a 10- or 15-minute drive.

Shopping The historic Monkton Village Center, formerly the Monkton Hotel, is home to several local businesses, including Monkton Yoga, Harmony Cafe, photographer Jodie Otte’s Black Horse Studio and Monkton Village Market. Across the street, at the historic Monkton Hall, Diddywopps & Keeffers sells work of American and local artists and craftspeople.

Hunt Valley Towne Centre includes a mix of local stores and national chains, such as Sears, Greetings & Readings and Ulta.

Dining In Graul’s Market in Parkton, Wegmans in Hunt Valley and Klein’s in Jacksonville offer prepared gourmet food, freshly baked goods and other grocery items.

Dining Out Manor Tavern, across from the restored Slade’s Inn, offers Maryland favorites. Milton Inn in nearby Sparks is a special-occasion restaurant. For everyday dining, there’s the Pioneer Pub in Hereford, the Wagon Wheel, offering breakfast and lunch, in Parkton, and Michael’s Pizza, which delivers in the area.

Nightlife Choices include Manor Tavern, Pioneer Pub and Friday night football games at Hereford High.

Recreation The Northern Central Railroad Trail runs through Monkton like a wooded Main Street, offering neighbors a place to catch up, walk dogs and teach children to ride bicycles.

Gunpowder Falls State Park offers tubing, hiking, fishing and horseback riding.

Maryland steeplechasing season runs from March through September. Polo matches are played on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons on the grounds of the Maryland Polo Club, off Mountain Road, east of Jarrettsville Pike.

Photographing Siblings - Part 3

At this session, it was so nice to see little E again, I had photographed him as a baby. Now, we had his little sister. When I saw his sister, I had to look again - she looks a LOT like her older brother did as a baby - even mom said she felt like she birthed the same baby - too funny!

Photographing newborns with their older sibling (ages 2 to 3) is always so very difficult, but extremely rewarding… these tender moments grabbed my heart… what a sweet bond they are going to have…

Photographing Siblings - Part 2

Two boys and a girl. Okay, I have to say I am very proud to get this shot! It was my favorite of the entire session. The goal was to get all three together for a special surprise gift for their mom.

Photographing siblings - Part 1

I’m often asked if I photograph siblings together - of course I do, and this is the time of year for it, getting close to the holidays! Depending upon their ages, it can be very difficult, or it can run very smoothly. You just never know… I very much enjoy working with siblings, even if by the time I am finished, I am ready for a nap :)

We’ll start this series with two girls and a boy… Mom had such a hard time getting them to the studio - we had to reschedule two or three times… Z broke her nose, then G had a minor accident at a swimming pool, and then the day of this shoot, R got a big bump on his forehead. Mom couldn’t catch a break here ;)

What we will do if football is cancelled today.

My son, Barrett, is back to playing football. He wanted to play, could prove he could do pushups on his bad shoulder (it wasn’t broke according to X-rays, even though the doctor was positive it was), and is back, lead blocking with his right shoulder *sigh*… I still have an appointment with a sports medicine doctor for him this week, so unless this doctor says he can’t play, he’s back for good. Today is supposed to be homecoming in Jarrettsville (I’ll make sure I get some pictures of the yellow and green face painting - yikes!), but with this weather, it MAY be changed to tomorrow.

IF it is changed to tomorrow, we will go to our favorite place… Okay, I’m going to admit our dirty little secret. Dean and I are addicted to sashimi. We have it at least once a week, every week, and have been doing so for months. I’ll share an image I took with my cell phone last week…

Sashimi

We don’t just eat sashimi anywhere, we are on the picky side. Our favorite place is in Towson –

This post is for my mom who finds this absolutely disgusting ;)

Thank you! | Maryland Child Photographer

Another picture from the final workshop - this one from Angela Hodge - thank you, Angela, you are too sweet!

She says in her email to me “P.S I will always remember your smile that you had doing what you love and the response you got back. (pics attached)”

Here are the pics she sent me… I seldom am in front of a camera, so of course I have to share…Photographer Jodie Otte

The Dogs

When I was photographing the mushrooms at the top of the page, I couldn’t help but to take some snaps of my pups… they can’t help but make a nuisance of themselves any time I bring the camera out… Moose (Chocolate Lab) is our laid back good ‘ol boy. Squiryl, on the other hand, is absolutely crazy. I feel the need to explain this every time I show pics - but Moose has that white PVC pipe around his invisible fence collar due to Squiryl chewing it off… :)

The Definition of Sweet.

This little girl was such a joy to listen to… she could tell you every part of the train… not just the engine and caboose but twin bay hoppers, box cars, gondolas, you name it, she knew it… ;) She is the total definition of sweet.  L, you are very blessed with such a sweet little girl!

We did it AGAIN!

This photograph is not easy to get, as A and M well know! We didn’t think we would get it. But we tried, one . last . time.

And her eyes were OPEN!!!!!

and I love this…. I feel total warmth from this shot — proud parents, she’s holding her daddy’s hand and the big smile on her face (okay, we know babies don’t smile on purpose at this age, but I loved it just the same…)

The Secret Photography Workshop

Edited: June 2, 2009

For the record:

I was the original partner of a secret workshop that was for photographers in 2007.

For the record:

There were disagreements.

For the record:

I was asked *originally* to continue as a speaker with all for 2008, as the partnership was not going to work.  I voiced I could not do both California workshops. I was to go on as a speaker instead of partner since there was a financial conflict being that I only received a small portion of what was originally discussed, and frankly, I run a very busy studio, and could not commit to much more than that.  That seemed like the way that things could continue amicably.

For the record:
I was cut from all without my knowledge except for Orlando, Florida and Flint, Michigan as of Fall of 2007.

For the record:

One week before the Orlando workshop, I was cut out of Flint.  This was done in an interesting fashion.  I called up asking why the June date was released without discussing it with me as that was my kids’ last day of school, I was told - “oh, I have Brianna Graham doing it instead, that’s why I released the date”

For the record:

I was not paid fully for the Orlando workshop.

For the record:

Thursday, January 10, 2008 at approximately 11 a.m., I was told to be there for Saturday, January 12 – to teach for approximately 3 hours. I asked, “should I stay for the model shoot later on to show people how to use the studio lights?” I was told “No, Amy and I have it…just leave your lights there.” Saturday, January 12th, I showed up at the studio in Orlando to teach my portion. 1 hour and 20 minutes into my teaching, I was abruptly interrupted with a “You’re done, you’re done, you’re done.”

Disclaimer:

I have received two Cease and Desists, one lawyer dropped it as the truth is the truth. Here’s the situation. I have all of this documented with journal, emails (recovered from old hard drive), and phone records.   I am not the only one that had bad experiences.  Many are afraid to speak up.

My request:

My request is that my pictures, my pricing structure, my tips on technique and shooting, and my lighting diagrams be taken out of all workshop-related material. I have received copies of workbooks that still contained my information without my authorization.  I would also like my name taken out of the meta-tags/source code on the Secret Photography Workshop’s website, as that is extremely unethical for a business to use another business in order to get hits to their website.

For the record:

I am done dealing with this. The truth is the truth.  I would never want to repeat the horrible experience I had working with this situation or the amount of times I had to bite my tongue because what was going on, and some of what was taught, I did not agree with.

A message to those who speak at workshops:

Please do yourself a favor. Have legal contracts written and signed before entering into any agreement. Everything needs to be written out and documented. Verbal agreements even amongst friends will inevitably go bad. Only agree to be a speaker if your payment is given to you in advance.

A message to those who frequent workshops:

First of all, with photography, you really do not need to attend workshops. You can find out all information about photography, post-processing, marketing, etc. through doing research in books and on line. Business related information can be easily obtained through your local Small Business Development Center for FREE.

If you are choosing a workshop, please be aware of the following things: There are moms with cameras (I use this term as the negative connotations surrounding it) who find that they don’t have much time to really develop a true portrait/photography business, and instead, throw overpriced and packed-like-sardines workshops out to teach others basic information that they have found themselves through online forums and books. Please do yourself a favor, and ask questions, many questions, to find out the credentials and business experience of your speaker before signing up. Do not feel bad about asking ANY question, although if you get vague answers, please know, there is a lot of false information being passed around on line - it’s easy to be a totally different person/business on line.  Asking questions is no different than wanting your child’s teacher to have credentials and experience. This is your money, research your speaker. Know that you are receiving information that was gained by your speaker through hard work, dedication to their craft, and especially EXPERIENCE. Anyone can throw up a website and spin themselves a business. Know where your money is going to…

Just to be clear, I do have very negative feelings about being a part of this workshop as well as some things that went on during these workshops that I didn’t feel were right and that there was no “backup” to what was being taught, but I will refrain from expanding on that at this time.

Three kids and a pup… Maryland Pet Photography

I don’t typically advertise pet photography on my site; however, I do photograph pets with their people on occasion on a limited basis.  If this is something that you wish to have, please contact the studio for details and restrictions.

It was my pleasure to photograph these three again!  I hadn’t seen them for two years - J, L, and M - thank you for brightening my day! :)

I was delighted to see that one of the attendees, Dorret, took an image of me shooting one of the images below (Dorret’s work is so diverse, I need to sit down and go through her Flickr photostream with a cup of coffee - really great shots - and did I hear it right?  Someone let you on their combine in Monkton while they were harvesting corn - you go!!!  That’s so awesome!  You must tell me the story!)

Here’s the image she took… This is one of my favorite spots on the studio property in Monkton.  This was when I took the black and white image of little Simon below…

Maryland Photography Workshop Followup

Closing this chapter.  We completed the last workshop for now.  I don’t forsee doing more in the future; however, I can’t say never.

A big thank you to all the attendees, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all of you!  I’m always humbled by how sweet and kind everyone is and how far you all travel!  wow! :)

Another HUMONGOUS thank you to Tracey for helping out - she is such a great friend to be there for me and I appreciate it so much!  Wish her a Happy Birthday today!  Yes, it’s her birthday! :)

Thanks to the models - we couldn’t have asked for sweeter models.  Here are a few images (although I don’t have my regular monitors hooked back up, so the color/contrast could look off here —>

A note to clients and anyone else trying to contact the studio — the phone I do business from needed to be replaced yesterday, so I am setting up the new situation and will be contacting you ASAP — you can also email me at theblackhorsestudio@verizon.net

Teaching.

After a late night newborn shoot, I’m on to teaching two full days - Thursday and Friday — emails and phone calls will be returned Friday evening or early Saturday morning :)

The last child | baby | pregnancy photography workshop/seminar for a while.

Workshop attendees for this week September 18th and 19th - you will receive an email filled with the last of the must-know info today, September 15th.  If you do not receive it, let me know.  Also, if you need a ride from the Hunt Valley hotel to the studio, please please email me at theblackhorsestudio@verizon.net  If you wish to carpool (or would like to volunteer to carpool), that is fine (and in fact, you will be able to do a “reply all” to the email so that attendees may discuss between each other), but I need to know the final count that must receive rides from me.

As far as the future of my workshops - at this time, I will not be able to do any more group workshops due to the amount of clients and business growth that has happened over the last few years.  I am always receiving emails asking if I will be traveling for workshops, etc.  I will be honest, I really wonder how much business/clients those who travel have because frankly, there is no possible way for me to work out traveling into my schedule :).  Just last week, I had nine portrait sessions on the books to be completed Monday to Friday.  Not to mention other assignments and dealing with “press” issues.  While I wouldn’t mind traveling here or there, I have committments to my clients, and my clients are the foundation of my photography business.

I will, however, be offering one-on-one mentoring beginning in late December; since it was just a “rumor”, those December slots are already filled - yes, that quickly and I hadn’t announced it yet! ;)

I will give some details of these one-on-one days here…

These will take place on Fridays at my studio.  The cost is $1295 (hotel/plane tickets not included) - $700 nonrefundable deposit required, balance due 7 days prior to scheduled date; however, if you bring a friend or business partner, the cost is reduced to $995 per attendee (we will limit the number of friends/business partners that you wish to sign up together to no more than 3 per day - this is your choice if you wish to add more attendees to your day).  Our day will begin at 10 a.m.  We will customize this day to fit your needs - YOU decide what you want to focus on the most - Business?  Studio Lighting?  Natural Lighting?   You may assist during a portrait session scheduled that day if you wish (we will discuss details).  You will receive a soft cover copy of the book, Studio Lighting Naturally as well as our natural lighting book which is still in production.  Our day will end at 6 p.m.  To sign up, you must not reside within a 75-mile radius of the zipcode 21111.

January and February 2009 dates are open (December is booked at this time)–

January 9th - open

January 16th - booked

January 23rd - open

January 30th - open

February 6th - open

February 13th - booked

February 20th - booked

February 27th - open

Horse Show Results…

I will be sharing more client sessions this week (I got behind on the postings ;)), but in the meantime, horribley sunburned and exhausted, Erynn and I returned from her horse show this weekend… This picture says it all…. Erynn and Stormy make a nice team.  I’m hoping to eventually get Erynn talked into doing English instead of Western riding.  While Stormy and Erynn place in Western Pleasure Shows, she will only be able to go so far with Stormy because of Stormy’s high head carriage.  I personally like horses who carry their heads high but Western Pleasure horses are supposed to “peanut roll” - their noses to the ground.  Stormy will never peanut roll.  I’m fine with that, but if Erynn wants to place a first (she’s so competitive), it’s not going to happen in Western Pleasure on a horse with a high head carriage.

I will say, it is very difficult when one of your children are “up” and one of them is “down”… in contrast, here’s Barrett on the sidelines at his game in sling… We are still holding out that there is a tiny chance that his collarbone is not broken - we will receive the definitive diagnosis today from the radiologist report.

football

Never a Dull Moment in the Otte Household…

Well, there sure is never a dull moment in my household.

I’m glad I got those photographs of my son playing football when I did.  Thursday night while scrimmaging during a practice, Barrett was running the ball.  I don’t remember what my husband called it, but basically what had happened was the offensive line was seriously missing their blocking, and Bear couldn’t go through the hole that was supposed to be opened up.  So he tried another way through only to be completely wiped out by the opposite team.  They took him down…  He landed on his left shoulder, but jumped back up and kept playing (thanks to adrenaline - hey, sounds like his Daddy when he played with the Baltimore Bulls and pushed his shoulder “back in place” and kept playing - despite the fact that his shoulder was completely blown to pieces inside… heh, like father like son? ;) at least Barrett’s injury won’t require a 6-hour surgery!).

Anyway, when he came home, I knew he was hurting, but didn’t know to the extent for sure (you know how kids sometimes will complain about a bruise…)  The next morning, I was waking him up at 5:30 a.m. for school and stood in his room and watched him.  The second he went to rise out of bed, he winced and grabbed his shoulder.  Yep - time to see the doctor.

The doctor diagnosed a broke collarbone.  *sigh*  It looks like he is probably done for the season.  We are waiting for the radiologist to read the x-rays but the doctor is 90% sure that it is broken.  Poor guy… he’s taking it well but hates his sling.

On a happier note, I didn’t share our new family member, did I?  Here’s Pippi - My new mare.  When I started getting back into riding a few years ago, I bought Stormy, our champaigne paint - My daughter took her over.  Then I bought Willow, our dappled grey Percheron cross - My son decided that was his horse… so I have never bought “MY” horse…  I finally did….  She’s such a sweetheart.  I had visions of Barrett, Erynn and myself out riding today, but it looks like Barrett is out of riding for a while too!  I’m not sure if he will be able to participate in our next paper chase either… :(

Emails, voicemails, schedule oh my… and newborn model

I want to apologize for the delay in responding to emails and voicemails.  We have received a very large influx all of a sudden, and are working on catching up.  All current emails and voicemails will be answered today (as soon as I come back to the office after a last-minute newborn shoot this morning ;))

If you are looking to book a session and have the images back in time for Christmas, please call or email now to get into my schedule.  Emails are responded to fastest (is that a word? lol) at theblackhorsestudio@verizon.net

I do want to place a call out for a “backup” newborn model for September 18th.  I believe we have our model, but he/she is not quite born yet, so wanted to make sure we have a backup just in case.  Email me for details.

For those who purchased the Studio Lighting Naturally book

I just realized that the wrong information was copied to the disks of the last 10 people who purchased the book.  I am going over my records and will send out a new disk — if you did not receive a disk with the printouts as well as video, actions, etc., please contact me right away at theblackhorsestudio@verizon.net and that will be sent to you this week.  I apologize for the inconvenience - the folder was labeled wrong when the CDs were being burned.

It’s that time of year!

I actually really missed this.  My son had been playing football since he was 5 years old, but we took a break for two years, and now he is back.  I missed photographing sports so much!  Here’s a few snaps I got at his first game last week.

Outside at the studio…

I really have enjoyed taking advantage of the beautiful weather to photograph my clients outdoors at the studio.  All I am looking for when shooting is the right light and the right textures, and there are quite a few “sweet spots” at the studio and surrounding property for just that…

Also, young children/toddlers last longer during portrait session when we can shoot a little indoors and then outdoors as well - a change of scenery always does them good… Isn’t this face just precious?

Because I predominantly photograph pregnant women and newborn babies, I am asked frequently about older kids and families.  Yes, absolutely, I photograph children as well as families.   I have photographed this family four times now, and they came all the way from New York City :)

Who do these belong to? and “I live in a box”

These gorgeous eyes  — getting ready to upload this gallery here shortly!

 Jodie Otte, Child Photographer

“I live in a box”… yes, that’s me, I live in a box!  I’m so busy all the time, between photography, my family, etc. etc., most of the time, I am not aware of what is going on around me - the news?   Nah, I’m not one to talk to about current events or what’s going on in the world because usually I am oblivious to it.  I’m not sure if that is good or bad…. I have actually felt so badly having customers in my studio and I am not realizing who they are.  I always hope not to put my foot in my mouth — one time last year, I remember having a couple in my studio, and I looked at the wife, and said, “I don’t know why, but I recognize you…” and she laughed and said, “That’s because I am on TV…”  I felt badly because as soon as she said that, I realized who she was.  It seems like that is the case so often… it makes me feel so stupid at times ;) That, and tripping over my equipment because I am so focused on a shot I must get! lol!

All that said to bring this up — unfortunately, I am pretty unaware of a lot of amazing artists as well.  This one was news to me, and I find her work completely fascinating!  I happened upon my friend, Angela’s blog this morning, and saw her link to this photographer - you must see, and enjoy! —- Yeondoo Jung

Kayaking off of Pea Island

No, I’m not done with the vacation pictures… ;)  I currently have triple the amount of sessions I usually have for the next two weeks… looks like the Christmas rush has already begun!

Here are two images  of the sunset as we were getting ready to head out to kayak on the Sound at Pea Island.  We had never been kayaking before, so if you know of my terrible fear of water (natural bodies of water), this was quite a challenge for me to get by my fears…

Erynn and I shared a kayak, and Dean and Barrett had their own.  Barrett was launched out first… I have to say, being out there at sunset was absolutely BEAUTIFUL - nothing else like it.  I wasn’t about to bring one of my good cameras out there in the water, so I did have a disposable waterproof Kodak - havn’t had that film developed yet, so this is all I have.

One simply AMAZING thing about the whole experience was as it was dark after the sun  had gone down, we were paddling back to shore, and all of a sudden, you could see your paddle glowing a little.  If you put your hand down in the water, you would see little specs of light.  It was bioluminescence in the water (did I spell that right?)  You could even pull your hand out of the water and see it all over your hands.  If you looked down into the water, you could see fish swimming with a trail of it behind them.  It was like nothing I had ever seen in my life.  What an incredible experience!

Boutique Mini-Sessions

We did a boutique Mini Session at Bediboo in August.

If your child was photographed, your gallery is ready and your passcode has been emailed to you. If you did not receive it, please check your spam folder, and then send an email to theblackhorsestudio@verizon.net. There were three who did not provide email addresses and two emails were returned to me.
