On Location Newborn Photography

I have to say, switching to on location newborn photography was the best thing I have done in a long time.   The newborn sessions seem to go so much smoother  I’ve been traveling to client homes in the Greater Baltimore areas including Harford County, Anne Arundel, Howard, and even into Pennsylvania for the past couple of years after having a commercial studio for 10 years.   I always said I wouldn’t do on location again, but now that I’m doing it, it has been wonderful.

As newborn photographers, we tend to believe that babies have to be between 7 and 10 days old for the best photographs or sessions are easier in the studio where you don’t have to lug equipment around, or that doing photo sessions in the evenings is impossible with newborns.  I’ve been completely blowing the lid off of all those myths.   I feel like if you put so many restrictions on, you are missing out on opportunities to not only be more creative, but learn your craft even better because you need to learn how to deal with more difficult situations.  You can’t become an expert unless you put yourself in the situations to test your skills.

When I go into a home, I evaluate the lighting situation.  I decide whether the shoot will be natural or studio light, and if studio, I run out to get a few things from my vehicle.  If natural, I just start shooting.  The best part?  I bet it’s really hard for you to tell which of my sessions are shot all natural light and which ones are shot all studio light.  Many times, I do a mix of both.

As usual, if you want to learn my lighting techniques, this book has been tried and true for nearly 10 years.  We now have it in Ebook format.

I’m finally catching up on life (just completed two more accelerated college courses, another step closer to actuary exams… and another two courses to finish within the next four weeks)….  I’ll be sharing some more images on location here in the coming weeks.  I’d also like to discuss natural posing techniques as opposed to the same ‘ol, same ‘ol that you see everywhere 🙂  .
